About Joe

JOE'S YOGA CLASSES ARE UNIQUE TO JOE'S STYLE OF TEACHING:

Joe (E-RYT500) has been using imagery and other neurological techniques to connect the mind and body through yoga. He weaves into his teaching each week a new theme with either a story or a life-affirming philosophy connected to an over-arching alignment principle. His classes are a synthesis of slow-flow and alignment styles of yoga while building balanced overall strength and core stability. Joe's playful manner and sense of humor create a warm and safe classroom environment and he welcomes all levels of practitioners. His students have a deep appreciation for his therapeutic ability to guide them on a healing path. Joe takes pride in creating a musical playlist to compliment his class themes. His students leave his classes feeling uplifted and inspired to participate fully in their lives.

Joe teaches weekly drop-in classes, an ongoing series class, workshops, and advanced training at Asheville Yoga Center and West Asheville Yoga. He offers therapeutic immersions, regional workshops, private one-on-one sessions, and mentoring to aspiring yoga teachers. Joe frequently travels to teach personalized workshops and classes around the region and at special events. He is happy to offer a workshop for you. Joe guarantees transformational fun!

JOE'S  YOGA  JOURNEY:

Joe (E-RYT500) has always found refuge in the pursuit of excellence in a variety of sports and outdoor activities since early childhood. He has been studying human movement patterns for almost three decades, not only as an athlete, but as a coach and teacher in a variety of sports and movement mediums. In the early 90’s after a decade-long career in whitewater kayaking, Joe began a dedicated yoga practice. The practice of yoga launch Joe on a deep understanding of how the body desires balance to be pain-free and how to apply subtle alignment actions at the right time to achieve this balance. Moreover, yoga transported Joe into a dedicated meditation and pranayama practice (breath work), and the pursuit of the study of sacred texts from India, ancient mythologies and philosophy with such renowned scholars as William Mahony.

By 2006 Joe’s interest in teaching yoga became his primary passion and he launch a full-time teaching career. From 2007 to 2013, Joe was a Certified Anusara® Yoga instructor and learned a great deal about the Universal Principles of Alignment from such accomplished teachers as Doug Keller, Sianna Sherman, Desiree Rumbaugh, Betsy Downing, and many more. Joe continued his movement pattern study beyond yoga and spent time learning and practicing Pilates and  weight training. In Joe's free time he enjoys mountain biker, skiing and rock-climber. Joe applies his understanding of how the breath, meditation, balanced musculature, and healthy movement patterns work together to sustain a healthy mind and body.

JOE'S  A PART  OF THE  CERTIFICATION  AND  ADVANCED TRAINING  PROGRAMS  AT AYC:

He offers advanced study modules in the 500 RYT certification program, such as The Art of Teaching Yoga  which offers support in creating a theme-based yoga class and how to organize your classes to reflect your true self. He also offers each year a 500 RYT called Yoga Therapeutics which covers such material as misalignment patterns and how to heal injuries through proper yoga actions. In the last years, Joe has immersed himself in the works of Eckhart Tolle and has drawn strong parallels to the perennial truths found in the ancient yogic texts. He teaches once a year an advanced training on this subject called The Power of Now
